Tuesday: Libya, Wisconsin, Israeli Settlements, Afghanistan

We kicked off the show with guest Mona El-Naggar, foreign correspondent based in Cairo who has been covering the Libya revolts and violent repression for the New York Times. One of her recent articles evaluates Ghaddafi/Qaddafi’s grip on power.

We moved right on to continue last week’s discussion of the budget/labor crisis in Wisconsin, which of course has been going on around the clock.

We spent all of Hour 2 talking with you about Wisconsin, state budget squeezes, organized labor, the Democratic party, teachers — the whole gamut.

At the top of Hour 3, Professor Stephen Walt joined us to explain US policy toward Israel/Palestine in light of President Obama’s first exercise of Washington’s veto power to block a UN Security Council resolution otherwise unanimously condemning the illegal settlements in the West Bank. Stephen wrote a controversial commentary on the matter following th vote. During the segment, Pete mentioned this debate between Noam Chomsky and Alan Dershowitz at Harvard.

Chrystia Freeland, global editor-at-large of Reuters, joined Pete for the first of what I hope will be many interviews, talking today about the growing gap between the super rich and the rest of us, and just how it came about. Chrystia’s recent article on the topic appeared in The Atlantic. Also check out this version prepared for the BBC. This interview was so good, I had to post the audio.

At the end of the show, Pete critiqued a NY Times op-ed by John Nagl and Nathaniel Flick claiming progress in Afghanistan.

Pete had a profound experience on Monday that led unexpectedly to some very powerful radio on today. Here are two clips of audio, including Pete’s introduction to the heart-wrenching story of the death of Marine Cpl. Derek Wyatt, whose only child was born shortly after news of his death reached Derek’s wife stateside. Then Pete reads an email from Derek’s father-in-law. The second clip features Pete reading and discussing an email he received during the show from Derek’s sister-in-law.
